GHS Pétanque

Club history

The Petanque club was founded in the spring of 1999, April 18.

Peter Ellekær was the founder since he was a keen Pétanque player. Peter became the first chairman of the club and the first board consisted of Poul Smith and Jørgen Due. Those three established the club, provided a petanque ground and other things needed for the start.

There was a hope to reach 10 members the first year, but it ended with 14, not so bad for a beginning. The club did not participate in any tournaments the first year, but spent the time to get started and learning the game, the rules and strategies of Pétanque. In the year of 2000 there were 16 members and the club participated in the DGI tournament. In 2001 the number of members had grown to 35.

Peter was chairman for the first three years with changing board members in those years. In 2001 Inger Sebens was elected as board member for financial matters, and she is still at that post in the club. Jørn Vestergaard Jensen became chairman after Peter and he is still chairman for the Pétanque club. Several board members have done a lot of work for the club during the years.

GHS Pétanque Club is a member of Grundfos Hobby & Sport Association and has been a club where the players have participated in tournaments around Denmark and Europe, and has been on several tours to other clubs for a tournament. The social part of the club is very strong, so although we compete against each other, there is room to have fun together.

Pétanque is a game both for fun and for competition. The rules are very simple and Petanque can be played by everybody irrespective of age. Popularly speaking, you can play Petanque as soon as you can lift the ball until you cannot do it anymore. A strong physique is not required to play Petanque, but concentration and tactics are of much higher importance.

In Grundfos Pétanque Club we care much for the good spirit and the social relations. Many activities take place in the club, and it can be recomended to read more and look at the pictures from the history of the Club.
